It's 40 years since The Smiths released their third studio album The Queen Is Dead. The album is a classic of British indie rock from the ‘80s released in 1986. It’s a witty, maudlin and sardonic critique of Thatcher's Britain, which combines Morrissey's romantic, sarcastic and playful lyrics with Johnny Marr's classy guitars to create a broken, nostalgic and often comic vision of British life.

January 2026 - Indian health authorities are battling an outbreak of Nipah virus after five people were confirmed to be infected with the incurable disease. The infections from the bat-borne virus were found in the eastern state of West Bengal, in two locations near Kolkata, India's third-most populous city. This week the authorities said that three new cases had been detected and warned that more cases were expected. They identified the patients as a doctor, a nurse and a health care worker, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.
