Notre-Dame

On Monday, April 15, 2019, an alarm went off during a Mass at Paris’s Notre-Dame Cathedral. For almost half an hour, evacuated worshippers and tourists waited outside, thinking it was a false alarm. Then a second klaxon, flames were seen crawling across the scaffolding, with the church’s famed spire silhouetted behind them. At almost 8pm the 295-foot, lead-encased wood tower collapsed. All too easily, the cathedral’s medieval wooden roof, known as “the forest” because it used so many trees, followed suit.  It was a sad day.

Firefighters were quick to react and, by some accounts, were able to extinguish the flames within 15 to 30 minutes of causing complete destruction of the cathedral.

The authorities have been able to find where the fire started but have never identified the cause....

“There are two kinds of people in the world, Notre Dame lovers and Notre Dame haters"

For the first time since the fire nearly destroyed it in 2019, the soaring Gothic cathedral has since reopened with celebrations and thanks to those who saved it and to those who rebuilt it.

Notre-Dame  reopened on Dec. 7th, 2024. In its first year of reopening more than 11 million people have visited it, and it is on track to draw even bigger crowds.

Morrissey Finally Releases Notre-Dame

Morrissey's  new  single couples swirling, disco‑infused synthpop with bittersweet memories. The song focuses on the fire that almost destroyed the Paris cathedral in 2019 and the whole tone of the song captures some of the same wrenching sadness. As a fan, I initially thought it felt too electronic with too many synthesisers and digital effects. Thing is, I've probably been spoilt by hearing it live several times, as live, it certainly seemed to have a more gritty, harder edge. Going even further, the song has a bit of 'James Bond' theme going on, in the same away as the opening track of Southpaw Grammar, The Teachers Are Afraid Of The Pupils  (abeit not as dramatic).  All that said, it certainly feels very gothic, dark-wave electronic, which is all fine and after all, it's by Morrissey, so it's OK by me....
