It Began With Tough Shit Mickey

I've followed Conflict around the country since the late 80s, and like Morrissey, Colin's lyrics are pure poetry that hits you unawares and (as in my case) changes your life forever. I was maybe late to the party, as I only discovered Conflict at the back end of the 80s but the impact they have had on my life has been immense.

I recall meeting a friend called Paul H one afternoon, I visited his flat in Rawmarsh (I think it was Rawmarsh), and we were discussing animal rights and the various horrors of the modern world where animals are used and treated as mere products within our society &  globally. Paul took an LP out his record collection, placed the needle on the groove, and handed me an insert from the album with song lyrics on them. The first track he played was a song called Tough Shit Mickey by Conflict. I sat there eyes glued to the lyric sheet and followed every word that Colin delivered through the speakers. I was immediately awestruck and felt such a powerful emotional connection, one I've only ever experienced when I first heard The Smiths. I then took a personal journey to collect everything by Conflict, which also led me into following bands such as Crass (I once interviewed Steve Ignorant for my Radio Show, These Charming Tunes on SineFM) and Subhumans too.  Without Colin, the animals and the animal rights movement has lost an important lifeline and a direct voice which  sadly I don't think will ever be replaced.

Colin Jerwood Rest In Power.
