Nipah Virus On The Rise (Again)
January 2026 - Indian health authorities are battling an outbreak of Nipah virus after five people were confirmed to be infected with the incurable disease. The infections from the bat-borne virus were found in the eastern state of West Bengal, in two locations near Kolkata, India's third-most populous city. This week the authorities said that three new cases had been detected and warned that more cases were expected. They identified the patients as a doctor, a nurse and a health care worker, according to the Press Trust of India news agency.
Two nurses, a man and a woman, have also tested positive. Both worked at the private Narayana Multispeciality Hospital in Barasat, about 15 miles north of Kolkata. The nurse fell into a coma after treating a patient suffering from severe breathing problems and who, doctors believe , caused her infection . However, before tests could be carried out, the patient collapsed and died .
They have tested 180 people and are isolating 20 people identified as high-risk contacts.

Why Do We Never Learn From History?
The COVID pandemic seems like a lifetime away, though it was only at the back-end of 2019, and various zoonotic diseases and viruses still keep appearing around the world, and if feels like no one is taking note or is bothered, though I do fear that such another outbreak (zoonotic) will happen again, and will keep happening while the world is treating animals the way it does day in day out!
This report was a scientfic warning to the world, and it's definitely worth a read. I originally read this report back in 2020 when it was first published and it has been the perfect guide for such zoonotic disease and virus (and the clue was in the name 'zoonotic' = a disease or infection that can spread naturally between animals and humans). As ever, the world won't listen....
You can read more about zoonotic diseases here.
